Microsoft Office Access 2003 Inside Out multiple elements that are arranged in a vertical column (such as a column of text boxes) moves the noncontrolling elements left and right so that they center horizontally on the controlling element. As with forms and reports, you can select multiple elements and choose Horizontal Spacing or Vertical Spacing from the Format menu to adjust the spacing between the elements. Like forms and reports, you can choose Make Equal, Increase, or Decrease on the submenus of these commands. In addition, you can choose Remove to eliminate all space between the elements. This is the command to use with data access pages if you want a vertical stack or horizontal row of elements to touch each other with no space between them. If you remember from form design, you use the Align Top command to remove the space between multiple controls in a vertical column; but if you try that command on a data access page, all the controls will end up on top of each other, probably not the result you want. With data access pages you ll probably use the Align Top command to top align a horizontal row of elements; avoid applying it to a vertical stack of elements. Tip The original data access page editor introduced in Access 2000 did not provide any undo capability. Fortunately, Access 2002 added Undo and Redo that let you remove or reapply up to the last 20 changes.

The Employees data access page that you created with the wizard doesn t quite look like or work like the sample dapXmplDeptEmployees that you saw in Figure 27-3. The sample DAP uses a drop-down list box to choose the department and doesn t have a department navigation bar. Also, the caption on the navigation bar for moving to different employee records is different. Finally, the sample DAP has a page heading and doesn t require you to click an expand control after you choose a department in order to see and edit the employee information. Let s take a look at the changes you need to apply to make the wizard page work like the sample page, and while we re at it, let s improve on the original by adding the employee photo to the page. Fixing the heading is easy.
