When choosing a view technology, you should consider the following: Expertise: Although using a new technology can be a nice challenge, it usually includes a learning curve. Most Java developers have worked with JSP Similarly, if you are already familiar with . XSLT, you might choose that as the view technology for your web application. Programming model: Each technology either enables or forces you to work in a certain way. For example, Velocity and FreeMarker do not allow you to write Java code inside your view files. Therefore, FreeMarker does not let you change anything inside the model data. Depending on your personal preferences, you may feel as though a particular technology is constraining you by its programming model or is assisting you in working the correct way. Technology maturity and quality: Because JSP is part of the J2EE specifications, it has a certain amount of maturity. FreeMarker and Velocity are separate, open source projects that are not part of any specification. Being part of a specification generally translates to more tool support. FreeMarker is easy to extend and allows the use of JSP tags in the template files, which means you can reuse existing tag libraries and take advantage of tool support for JSP tags.

If you tell users the names of the fields you used in your index, they can use those fields to narrow down their searches. You can have several terms, all with different fields. For instance, you may want to find documents with the title Sherlock Holmes , and the word elementary in the contents: "title:Sherlock Holmes AND elementary". Lucene supports AND, OR, NOT, and exclude (-). Lucene defaults to OR for any terms, but documents that contain all or most of the terms will generally have higher scores.
