Bruce Johnson Applications that don t handle exceptions properly are a pet peeve of mine. Usually developers code their applications in one of two ways, and I m still trying to decide which is worse. In one case, the application has no code at all that deals with exceptions. So if anything unexpected happens, the application is terminated with, at most, the Microsoft Windows default unhandled exception dialog box. In the second case, the application catches every single exception that the operating system could possibly throw. Now, regardless of what might happen on the computer, there is no way that the application will ever shut down unexpectedly. This also means that the application continues to assume that everything is working properly even as the memory chips are sizzling and flames are lapping at the hard drive. The best applications take a middle path. They find ways to handle exceptions that can be anticipated while providing a graceful exit mechanism for cases that have no immediate resolution. This chapter discusses the attributes of this more appropriate exception handling mechanism so that you can more easily integrate one into your application.
