One of the more interesting things you can do with lists is to define master-detail relationships between two or more lists. A master-detail relationship between lists looks a lot like the parentchild relationship between tables in a database. Basically, it means that a list designated as the master has items that relate to one or more items in a second list called the detail list. One example of a master-detail relationship might involve a list of the departments in your organization. Since departments consist of one or more staff members, you might build a detail list of staff and include their names, titles, telephone extensions, and related information. Another example might list your employees in a master list and the projects they work on in the detail list. In fact, the staff detail list of the first example might serve as the master list for the second example. In SharePoint, when you create a master-detail relationship between lists, the master list controls the items you can see in the detail list. In other words, the master list displays all its items. However, the item you select from the master list determines which items, if any, appear in the detail list. Figure 3-23 shows two lists on one page. The top list displays a list of authors for different genres of computer books. The bottom list displays a list of books written by each of the authors. You probably noticed that author names provide a common element between these two lists. You must have a common or linking field between your two lists to create a master-detail relationship. Thus you can create a master-detail relationship between these two lists using the author field.

If you begin with the Author Resources list, drop down the menu from the Edit button in the list header. You will see the option Connections at the bottom of menu. As you hover your cursor over the word Connections, a secondary menu pops out to the side that defines the possible connection types. From this menu, move your mouse over the Provide Row To option. You use the Provide Row To option when you begin from the master list side. You use the Get Sort/Filter From option when you begin with the detail list. Another menu

appears listing the other available lists on the current page. In this case, select Book List from the menu. Figure 3-24 shows this sequence of selections.

Within the New Site Content Type dialog box, enter a name for your new content type. For example, you may want to abbreviate the name for the content type as RFB. Next, supply a description for the content type so everyone knows the purpose of the new content type.

Notice that, in this section, you can also determine from which content group and specific content type you want to inherit the new content type. In the case of the RFB, the most logical content type to inherit from is the Document type in the Document Content Types group. You can also determine in which group to place the new content type, including creating a new content type group if you feel that the differences in the new content type warrant its own group. 7. To finish the definition of the content type, click the OK button. Figure 12-6 shows the definition of the RFB content type.
