In this atmosphere, Zworykin and his Westinghouse associates met and merged with their fellow television engineers from the General Electric Company, now joined under the RCA banner. Zworykin s idea of an electronic camera tube that would incorporate charge storage to enhance its light sensitivity was embodied in his concept of the Iconoscope. Work toward that goal had progressed very slowly during the years he spent at Westinghouse, probably due to the lack of corporate enthusiasm for the whole matter of television. Now, merged with the team from GE, and with the enthusiastic backing of Sarnoff, development of the tube proceeded at a greatly accelerated rate. Snapshot replication sends the entire data set (or a subset of the rows or columns if you are using filtering) to the subscriber each time a new snapshot is generated. Snapshot replication can provide point-in-time synchronization. After the snapshot is generated and distributed to the subscriber(s), the subscriber becomes increasingly out of sync with the publisher. The subscriber will become synchronized with the publisher the next time the snapshot is generated and distributed. The term for the degree to which the subscriber is out of sync with the publisher is called latency. Latency with snapshot replication is typically very large. Transactional replication uses the transaction log to generate transactions for replication to the subscribers. It is more scalable than snapshot replication because only the transactions or changes are replicated. The latency is much less than with snapshot replication, as changes are continually being applied to the subscriber. Transactional replication has three components: a snapshot agent to generate the schema, data, and necessary replication metadata to track the replication process, a distribution agent to distribute the snapshot and subsequent commands, and a log reader agent to read the transaction log for the publication database.

All of this, of course, is a way to get around the extremely limited type offerings that are available to web developers. But if you can stay with the offerings available to all browsers, then the best option is to layer text on top of an image. This combines the appeal of a visual design with the efficacy of text, as shown in Figure 9.4. By exposing the search engine to plain text as much as possible, you ll have a better chance of getting your page found by searchers.

p(xi ). The optimal binary code should assign longer codewords to higher probability symbols and shorter codewords to those that appear more frequently. The procedure is outline as follows: 1. Let each symbol be a leaf node of a tree with an assigned probability, p(xi ). Arrange the symbols so that their occurrence probabilities are in a decreasing order. 2. While there is more than one node, (a) identify the two nodes with smallest probabilities and arbitrarily assign a binary 1 and a binary 0 to these nodes; (b) merge the two nodes to create a new node with probability equal to the sum of those nodes. 3. The last remaining node is the root node. The codeword for each symbol can be traced from the root node to each leaf node. An example of a Huffman code construction is shown in Figure 23.8. This example illustrates the successive assignment of 0 and 1 to each of the leaf nodes with lowest probability and merging of those nodes until the root node is reached. This example demonstrates that none of the resulting codewords are the pre x of any other codeword. The code shown in this example has an average length of 2.4 bits.
