To support the Windows RSS Platform, Microsoft has added a set of extensions for RSS and Atom newsfeeds. In this section, we ll help you understand these extensions and decide whether you should use them in your applications. To refresh your memory, let s review the extension concept. Newsfeed extensions were first introduced in RSS 1.0 and are now part of both RSS 2.0 and Atom. As we explained in chapter 4, section 4.2.2, you can extend a newsfeed format by adding your own new XML elements anywhere in the newsfeed as long as your new elements exist inside their own XML namespace.
