Linux manages memory for a process in pages that are mapped into the current process s memory space by the memory-management system. Memory management is part of the hardware but also needs the software in order to be configured correctly for the process running on the system. When a program starts, the kernel maps out memory in RAM where the program will be running and then maps that physical address to the logical address of the process. In this way, when any program runs, it may think its memory starts at address 0; the memory-management system that handles this resides in physical memory. The program may also request more memory than exists in RAM; the memory-management system (if enabled by the kernel) begins allocating memory that is on a storage device but is moved into RAM memory when needed. This virtual memory is a large contributor to your hard-drive light flickering when you use your desktop system. When the program requests virtual memory that is isn t in physical RAM, the virtual-memory system must retrieve the data and put it into memory for use; this process is called a page fault. That s a misnomer because a fault means something is wrong, which isn t the case. If the system is using virtual memory, those pages can be swapped to disk at arbitrary points, meaning the system must fetch them back into RAM when necessary. The process of putting data on the disk and retrieving it is inherently unpredictable.
